Using your computer with the Local Agent

The Chat with Work Local Agent is a small open-source program, cww, that lets the assistant search folders you share from your own Mac, Windows, or Linux computer. The Local Agent decides what can be read and changed, and only the results of each search or read leave your computer. Its source is at github.com/crmne/chatwithwork-local-agent. Install it - macOS: brew install crmne/tap/cww - Windows: WinGet - Arch Linux: the PKGBUILD, with makepkg -si - Debian and Ubuntu: the .deb package - Fedora and openSUSE: the .rpm package The install guide with every command is at github.com/crmne/chatwithwork-local-agent#install. Share a folder and connect 1. Share the folders it may read, for example cww roots add ~/Documents/Work. Nothing else on the computer is shared. 2. Run cww login. 3. On the connect page it opens, confirm the code it shows, and confirm it's you with your password, Google, or a code we email you. The computer joins the organization the page is open in. It then runs in the background and at every login, and the assistant can use it while it's online. Guests can't connect computers. Settings, Connectors, Computers before any computer is connected: install the Local Agent, then run cww login File changes, only where you allow them Shared folders are read-only. To let the assistant change files in one, allow it on the computer itself, with cww roots allow-changes or the Allow changes switch in the Local Agent's app. It can't be turned on from the website. Even then: - each change waits for your approval in the chat, with the text or the difference it will make; - what a change replaces or deletes goes to that computer's trash; - owners and admins can turn changes off for the organization (Connectors can make changes in Settings ▸ People). Commands, only if you opt in The assistant can also run commands, like tests or builds, in a folder, on Mac and Linux. This needs three things: an owner or admin turns on Run commands on computers in Settings ▸ People, the folder allows changes, and you allow commands in it on the computer (cww roots allow-commands). Each command runs in a sandbox limited to that folder, without network unless you allowed it, and always asks first. A command can change or delete anything in its folder, and what it deletes doesn't go to the trash. Settings, People: the organization's switches for Connectors can make changes and Run commands on computers Chats from the terminal cww tui shows your chats beside your folders, lets you ask, and lets you approve or deny changes. When connecting, keep Also let the app use your chats checked, or allow it later in Settings. Manage your computers Settings ▸ Connectors ▸ Computers lists each computer with Pause, Disconnect, and Turn off chats, plus an activity log of what the assistant asked for, without file contents. Self-hosting Chat with Work

Chat with Work also runs on your own servers, for teams that need it inside their own network. It's the same product: the same connectors, your MCP servers, answers with sources, and changes only after approval. To talk through your environment, email hello@chatwithwork.com, or read chatwithwork.com/self-hosted. What a self-hosted install is - One organization. The first person to sign up becomes its owner. After that, people join by invitation or join link. - Your infrastructure. It runs as Docker containers with Postgres, HTTPS, and daily encrypted backups to a place you choose. We can install it for you with one command, or your team can install it with Docker Compose or Kamal, following the install guide that comes with it. - Your models. Every model call, including chat titles and summaries, can run on local models through Ollama or GPUStack, or on a provider you choose. Your connectors still reach the services where they live, and scanned PDFs need a model that reads PDFs. Licence Each install needs a licence we sign for it. The app checks it offline, when it starts and once a day, and sends nothing to check it. - If a licence has ended, everything keeps working for 30 days, and owners and admins see when new questions will stop. - Without a valid licence, new questions are refused, but every chat stays readable. - More people than the licence's seats only shows owners and admins a warning. Guests don't count. Updates Once a day an install asks chatwithwork.com which releases are out, sending only its version. Owners and admins see a quiet line when a newer release is out, and a red notice when one fixes a security problem. You choose when to upgrade. On installs set up with our installer, security releases install overnight after a backup, unless you turn that off. You can also turn the daily check off. What it sends us Nothing about your people or their chats, unless you choose to. Error reports reach us only if your administrator says yes, or sends one by hand, and they never carry what people asked, read, or are called. Questions? Email hello@chatwithwork.com or support@chatwithwork.com.
