Using Chat with Work in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Docs

Last updated on Oct 23, 2026

Chat with Work can sit beside the document you're working on, in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. It's the same assistant, with your integrations, instructions, and credits, and the chats you start there are yours, in Chats like any other.

Add it

Your Microsoft 365 admin can add Chat with Work for everyone in Microsoft 365 admin center ▸ Settings ▸ Integrated apps. To try it yourself first, add it from its manifest, https://chatwithwork.com/office/manifest.xml:

  • Office on the web: open a document, then Home ▸ Add-ins ▸ More Settings ▸ Upload My Add-in, and choose the manifest you saved.
  • Word, Excel, or PowerPoint on a Mac: save the manifest into ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Documents/wef (or com.microsoft.Excel, com.microsoft.Powerpoint), then restart the app.

Then press Chat with Work on the Home tab.

In Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, once the Chat with Work add-on is installed for you or your organization, choose Extensions ▸ Chat with Work ▸ Open Chat with Work.

The first time, the pane asks you to sign in. A small window opens (in Google's editors, allow pop-ups if your browser asks): sign in as you always do (or confirm, if you're already signed in), and press Continue. The pane signs in on its own and keeps no password.

Connect where your files are

The pane works through the integration your files live in: OneDrive or SharePoint for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, Google Drive for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides. If it isn't connected yet, the pane asks first. A window opens to connect it, set to read and to make changes you approve; you can choose read-only there. Everything the assistant can do in a chat, it can do in the pane.

Ask with your selection

Select text in Word, PowerPoint, Docs, or Slides, or cells in Excel or Sheets, then ask. What you selected goes with your question, and a line above the box says so. Press Leave out to ask without it. A question you send while an answer is still being written goes without the selection.

Changes to the open document

When the assistant wants to change the document you're in, its approval card shows the change: the passage that goes and the text that takes its place, or the cells it writes. Press Apply in the pane, and the change is made in the open document, keeping its formatting. Undo takes it back. In Google Docs, change one paragraph at a time. Nothing changes until you press it, and these changes can only be approved in the pane, never allowed for the rest of a chat.

The assistant can still use everything else you've connected, and changes to your other tools ask for your approval as always.
